Born in Springfield, Massachusetts, Wayne Granger is a retired professional baseball player. He became active in the MLB from 1968 to 1976 and was a pitcher for a number of teams including the Cincinnati Reds and the New York Yankees. Granger is best remembered in the diamond by his rather thin frame with a 6'4” height and a weight of 165 lbs. In 1965, Granger was signed by the St. Louis Cardinals in the amateur draft and was able to make his first MLB appearance for the team in 1968. During that season, Granger had a 4-2 record which included a 2.25 earned run average. He was traded to the Cincinnati Reds in 1969 and became part of the Big Red Machine as a relief pitcher. During his first season with the Reds, Granger was able to come up with a 2.79 earned run average and converted 27 saves. He was awarded as that year's NL Fireman of the Year. In 1970, Granger was able to convert 35 saves with a 2.66 earned run average. He finished eighth in the voting for the NL Cy Young Award. After sustaining arm injuries, Granger decided to retire in 1976. He had also played for the Minnesota Twins, New York Yankees, Chicago White Sox, Houston Astros and the Montreal Expos.
