As a high school basketball athlete, he led his team in several Missouri state championships. He had an average of 28.2 points and 13.4 rebounds and became undoubtedly popular. He played college basketball at University of Carolina where he led in terms of points with 18.9 PPG. As a senior college player, he led the ACC with 21.1 PPg and ranked 4th in free throw percentage and 6th in offensive rebounds. He was 6th in field goal percentage and was the 7th player in rebounding. He had a 28 straight free throw record and shot at 84.9 percent from the free throw line.
