He played for the Savanna High School baseball team called “Rebels” where he exhibited his pitching skills and moved on to University of Arizona. The Cincinnati Reds selected him as an 11th round pick in the 1989 amateur draft and played as a shortstop and also as a third baseman for the team's minor league team Charleston. In 1991, he played as a pitcher and posted a 1.89 ERA and made 75 strikeouts for the Single-A Cedar Rapids and the Double-A team Chattanooga. He also became part of the team San Diego Padres and in 2009 joined the Milwaukee Brewers. Hoffman currently holds the MLB record for most number of saves with 596 as of May 2010.
