Born on May 13, 1977 in Macon, Georgia, he spent five seasons in the minor league and is said to be drafted thrice. His first draft was in 1995 when the Florida Marlins selected him. It was followed by another draft in 1997 when the Tampa Bay Devil Rays chose him to be part of the team and the last was by the Arizona Diamondbacks who drafted him in 1998. According to sources, his first Major League Baseball game was on April 11, 2003 for the Arizona Diamondbacks. That year, he posted a batting average of .282 and played as a catcher for 28 games he started. Because of his noteworthy statistics for that season, he was included to the 2003 Topps All-Star Rookie Roster and ranked third among the Diamondbacks catchers.
