Randy Lee Velarde is a former American professional baseball player in the Major League Baseball. He was born in Midland, Texas. He played as infielder for numerous teams in the major league; the New York Yankees, California Angels , Oakland Athletics and the Texas Rangers. Velarde studied college at Lubbock Christian University. He was listed at 6 ft. and 185 lbs. He batted and threw with his right. Velarde began his professional baseball career after he was drafted by the Chicago White Sox of the Major League Baseball during the 1985 amateur draft where he was the nineteenth round pick of the team. He formally signed on June 14, 1985 and made his professional debut on August 20, 1987 with the New York Yankees after he was traded by the White Sox in exchange for Mike Soper and Scott Nielsen on January of 1987. After the Yankees released him in 1994, Velarde joined several other teams in the major league. On January 11, 2002, Velarde signed as free agent with his last team, the Oakland Athletics . Velarde had his final game with the Athletics on September 29, 2002. According to sources, in the 2006 book Game of Shadows, Velarde's name was mentioned several times in connection with the use of performance enhancing drugs.
