Quilvio Veras was a Major League Baseball second baseman. He was born on April 3, 1971 in Santo Domingo, Distrito Nacional, Dominican Republic. He started his career when he was signed by the New York Mets as an amateur free agent in 1989. By 1994, he was traded to Florida Marlins for Carl Everett. By April 25, 1995, he broke into the major leagues for the Marlins. He was 24. The same year, he was awarded with the Rookie of the Year award. He placed third on the National League voting. By November 21, 1996, he was traded again to the San Diego Padres for Dustin Hermanson. From the Padres, he went as a trade to the Atlanta Braves, along with Wally Joyner and Reggie Sanders, for Bret Boone, Ryan Klesko , and Jason Shiell. After almost 2 years, he was released on August 8, 2001 by the Braves and within the same month was signed by the Boston Red Sox. His actual final game however, was on July 13, 2001. During the 1988 season, Veras had to leave the game because his brother was shot to death in the Dominican Republic. Currently, he is in the Kansas City Royals coaching staff, acting as a base running coordinator for the team.
