Phil Garner (Phil Mason Garner), was born on April 30, 1949 in Jefferson City, Tenessee. He was an infielder for Major Baseball League before he became the manager of the Astros by the year 2004. As a player, he was known to have a gritty style, earning him the nickname “Scrap-Iron”. His best season was during the NL Championship Series in 1979 where he batted .417 and an amazing .500 for the World Series. A right handed batter and thrower, he debuted for the MLB on September 10, 1973 for Oakland Athletics. He also played for Pittsburgh Pirates, Los Angeles Dodgers, Houston Astros and from 1973 to 1988, for the San Francisco Giants. Extensive reviews say he made an average of .260 for batting, 109 home runs and 738 runs batted in. His career highlights include being a three-time All-Star selection for the years 1976, 1980 and 1981, and a champion for the 1979 World Series. In 2005, he became the manager for Milwaukee Brewers and Detroit Tigers. He also led the Astros to the World Series when he was the manager of the team. Replacing Tom Trebelhorn as manager of Brewers, he was able to make the team stole 10 bases and finish 2nd in AL East in 1992.
