Edison Arantes do Nascimento, or Pelé to his fans around the world, is widely recognized as the greatest footballer ever to play the game. Pelé officially retired in 1977 following a scrimmage between the Cosmos and Santos, a game in which Pelé played one half as a member of each club. Pelé is a member of the American National Soccer Hall of Fame, as well as being the all-time top scorer in the history of the Brazilian national team. He is also the only footballer to be a part of three World Cup-winning clubs. He was named “Athlete of the Century” by the International Olympic Committee in 1999 and is ranked as the greatest footballer of all time in a consensus of expert and media polls.
