Paul Holmgren is a former professional ice hockey player in the National Hockey League. Presently, Holmgren is the Philadelphia Flyers' manager. Holmgren was born in St. Paul, Minnesota and played as a right wing in the league. He started his professional career playing for the Minnesota Fighting Saints when his rights were purchased by the team after he was drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in the 1974 WHA amateur draft. Holmgren found himself playing for the Philadelphia Flyers after the Fighting Saints folded. A month after signing with the NFL team, Holmgren was able to make his debut appearance in the league. He was with the Flyers for a total of eight seasons and was noted for his aggressive manner of playing. He was able to score a hat trick during one Stanley Cup finals which was a first for a US-trained player. Holmgren was named into the NHL All-Star Game of the 1981 season and also played for the US Team during that year's Canada Cup. Holmgren announced his retirement during the 1985 season and was immediately hired as the Flyer's Assistant Coach and then Head Coach after the 1987 season.
