Pat Quinn, nicknamed “The Big Irishman,” is a former National Hockey League head coach. Before his coaching career, Quinn was formerly a defenceman in the National Hockey League; he played for nine seasons in the league with several teams, among were the Toronto Maple Leafs, Vancouver Canucks and the Atlanta Flames. Quinn came out from the junior ranks playing for the Edmonton Oil Kings; in 1963 he won a Memorial Cup with the club. Later, as part-owner of the Vancouver Giants, he won another Memorial Cup in 2007. Quinn coached for a few teams in the league including: the Philadelphia Flyers, Los Angeles Kings, Vancouver Canucks and Toronto Maple Leafs and his most recent team, the Edmonton Oilers. Quinn was able to make it to the Stanley Cup Finals two times with the Philadelphia Flyers in 1980 and with the Vancouver Canucks in 1994. During the 2002 Winter Olympics, Quinn had coached Team Canada to win the gold medals. After high school, Quinn received a scholarship from Michigan Technological University. However, he was declared not qualified to play by the National Collegiate Athletic Association due to the fact that he already signed with the Detroit Red Wings, sources say. Quinn made his NFL debut in 1968 with the Toronto Maple Leafs. During his rookie season with the Maple Leafs, Quinn was best considered during the 1969 playoffs against the Boston Bruins for an open-ice body check on Bobby Orr that left later unconscious and provoked a bench-clearing scuffle. Following two seasons with the Maple Leafs, the Vancouver Canucks claimed Quinn during the 1970 NHL Expansion Draft, where Quinn played for another two seasons. When during the 1972 NHL Expansion Draft Quinn was claimed by and served as team captain of the Atlanta Flames. Quinn, suffering an injured ankle, retired too early in 1977. This incident made Quinn shift from his playing career to coaching career as assistant coach for the Philadelphia Flyers in that same year.
