He had his high school education at Damian Davis Ortiz High School and began his Major League Baseball career with the Atlanta Braves. He was part of the Braves' playoffs in 1998 even if he did not win any game in the regular season. He recorded 5.2 innings pitched in 1999 and then moved to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2002 season. He logged 27 wins in the 2002 to 2003 seasons with the Dodgers and belonged to the Dodgers' list of players who had more than 12 wins, a record achieved by Fernando Valenzuela in 1987. He was chosen to be part of the All-Star game in the 2002 season and in 2006, he joined the Kansas City Royals. After two years with the Royals, he moved to the Washington Nationals and signed a minor league deal with the team. On March 30, 2008, he made his first homer in the Nationals Park and recorded 4 hits after 5 innings. At present, Perez is a free agent.
