Nickey Maxwell Van Exel, more popularly known as Van Exel, was born on November 27, 1971 in Kenosha, Wisconsin, is a retired professional basketball player. He is now the assistant coach of the Texas Southern University. He stands six feet and one inch and weighs one hundred seventy pounds. He was known for his flashy style of playing and his exemplary skill to make critical shots in a game. He first played with the San Antonio Spurs in his NBA career. He also played with the Golden State Warriors , Denver Nuggets, and with the Los Angeles Lakers. With the Lakers, he was part of the rebuilding plan of the team together with Eddie Jones. The two new team members helped the Lakers to win the playoffs in the year 1995. Due to his buzzer beater shots and shooting streaks, he was known as Nick the Quick. On the year 1998, he was traded to the Denver Nuggets in exchange for Tony Battie. With the Nuggets, he made a record of 17.9 ppg, 8.3 apg and 21.4 ppg. He was again traded to the Dallas Mavericks in the year 2002 for Juwan Howard, Tim Hardaway and Donnel Harvey. When he was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers on the year 2004, he suffered an injury that caused decline in his stellar performance. Later that year, he announced his retirement and now, he works as an assistant coach for the Texas Southern University.
