Punto had his college education at Saddleback University in Mission Viejo, California. Punto was drafted by Minnesota Twins in the 33rd round on June 3, 1997 amateur draft, however, he did not sign. Punto began the season with the team, but he was injured two times and spent most of his time in 2004 on the disabled list. In 2005, Punto competed for the second base, which he ultimately won, and in 2006 he became the starter for the third baseman. Punto is one of four Twins players nicknamed The Piranhas, according to one sports review. The other Piranhas were Jason Bartlett, Jason Tyner, and Luis Castillo.
