Nick Fotiu is a former ice hockey forward who became active in 1973 to 1990. Although he was born in Staten Island, New York, his joining the New York Rangers during the start of his professional career would be the first time that a player from Staten Island would be admitted to the local NHL franchise. Fotiu's professional hockey career was launched after he signed with the New England Whalers of the World Hockey Association. Two years later, he signed with the New York Rangers where he became the “enforcer”. Playing for the Rangers made him very popular with the local fans of the New York-based franchise. During the 1979 NHL Expansion, the Hartford Whalers reclaimed Fotiu. Fotiu became very popular among his fans especially with his habit of throwing pucks into the “blue seats” of the Madison Square Garden. The “blue seats” are the least expensive and are placed the farthest away from the rink. In the 1980-81 season, Fotiu was traded back to the New York Rangers. He played for the rangers in five more seasons before being traded to the Calgary Flames in 1986 where he became instrumental in leading the team to the Stanley Cup Finals. Fotiu also played for the Philadelphia Flyers and the Edmonton Oilers.
