Although his father might be the Houston Texans' Associate Director of the Pro Personnel, Mike Grier decided to go with a different sport. Rather than play in the football field like his father, Bobby Grier, did Mike Grier decided to play in the hockey rink instead. The younger Grier is the current right wing for the Buffalo Sabres. He has been playing in the National Hockey League from 1996. He made history by being the first African-American NHL player who has received his training in the United States. During the 1993 NHL Draft, Grier was selected by the St. Louis Blues during the 9th round. He went to Boston University where he was named to the All-Star's first team during the 1994 season. While he was playing for Boston, his rights were traded together with Curtis Joseph were traded to the Edmonton Oilers. Grier immediately got a spot in the Oilers' roster as a right winger. During his first season, he was able to come up 32 points. In two seasons with the Oilers, Grier was able to come up with 20 points. He was traded to the Washington Capitals in 2002 and then to the Buffalo Sabres in 2004. He was able to lead the Sabres to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2006.
