Born in Louisville, Kentucky, Mike Greenwell is a retired professional baseball player in the Major League Baseball. He was an infielder for the Boston Red Sox and for the Hanshin Tigers for a short time. Often referred to as “The Gator”, Greenwell is a left-handed batter. He went to North Fort Myers High School. During the 1982 amateur draft, Greenwell was drafted by the Boston Red Sox during the third round. After spending the first few seasons in the minors, Greenwell was called up to the Red Sox in 1985. He was able to play in 17 games, hit 4 homeruns and posted a .323 batting average. He was able to maintain that batting average until the 1989 season. In 1988, Greenwell was able to hit 22 homers and was named to his first All-Star Game. After hitting 14 homers in the next season, he made his second appearance in the All-Star. During the 1988 season, Greenwell finished second in the voting for the AL MVP. Jose Canseco got the award after hitting 40 homers and stealing 40 bases. He signed with the Hanshin Tigers in 1997 after playing for 12 seasons with the Red Sox. Greenwell announced his retirement in 1997.
