Merril DuAine Hoge is a retired professional football player born on January 26, 1965 in Pocatello, Idaho. He p;ayed football at Highland High School and became a running back for the Idaho State University football team for three years. He went pro in 1987 for the Pittsburgh Steelers who drafted him in the 1987 NFL Draft round ten. He was the 261st pick overall in the said draft. Hoge spent seven seasons with the Steelers and later on played for the Chicago Bears. He signed with the team as a free agent in 1994 and appeared in five games. He had 13 receptions and six carries as a Bear. Hoge played with jersey number 33 and ended his professional career with 3, 139 rushing yards and 34 touchdowns. He made 2133 receiving yards in his entire career. He retired after having injuries at the last few seasons of his NFL career. He was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma on February 14, 2003 and has undergone chemotherapy treatments for five months. He was declared cancer-free on July 2, 2003. Currently, he is a broadcaster working for the ESPN as a color commentator. He also worked as an analyst for the network which he joined in 1996. He appears on SportsCenter during Mondays and has provided field reports for the Sunday NFL Countdown as well as play-by-play coverage for the Arena Football League.
