He originally played for the Kansas City Royals who drafted him. He was instrumental for the Royals to bag the 1984 American League Western Division. They also won the 1985 World Series. Gubicza was included to the Al-Star teams of the American League twice, one in 1988 and the other in 1989. He ranked third in the American League Cy Young Award in 1988. His 20-8 win-loss record and 8 full games, with 237 hits and 11 home runs made him a finalist for the said award. In 1989 and 1995, he became an American League in number of games started with 36 and 33, respectively. He also led the league in 1994 in number of walks with 1.80. He is also 1987 Royals leader for single-season walks with 120 and ranked 64th in MLB wild pitches. He played a total of 384 games in his 14-year career.
