He started his Major League Baseball career after he was signed by the Cleveland Indians on April 1, 1998 and then joined the Montreal Expos in the 2003 season. In his 2004 season in the minors, he recorded three home runs and had 36 runs batted in. He finally had his Major League Baseball debut on August 27, 2004 for the Montreal Expos; and also recorded his first major league hit on that debut game. While with the Expos, he appeared in 32 games. After his period with the Expos, he was traded to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. After Orlando Cabrera occupied the shortstop in the roster, Izturis became a utility infielder. He logged four hits in one game on July 17, 2006 in game against the Cleveland Indians.
