Luis Gonzalez, also known as “Gonzo” is a professional baseball player in the Major League Baseball. He is of Cuban descent and was most popular while playing for the Arizona Diamondbacks.He went to Thomas Jefferson High School in Florida and then the University of South Alabama. During his first year of playing collegiate baseball, Gonzalez was named into the All-Freshman Second-Team. In 1988, Gonzalez joined the MLB Draft where he was picked by the Houston Astros during round four of the draft. He first appeared in the MLB in 1990 for the Astros but he wasn't exceptionally powerful when it came to batting. He posted a .300 batting average during his 1993 season with Houston. Gonzalez signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 1998 and was able to come up with a .336 batting average during his first season with the team. In 1999, he was named into his first All-Star Game. He would play again in the All-Star in 2001-2003 and 2005. In 2001, Gonzalez was able to hit a total of 51 homeruns in the season and helped the Diamondbacks win the World Series title. He also won the Silver Slugger award for that season as well as the Home Run Derby. In 2005, Gonzalez was awarded the 2005 Branch Rickey Award. He announced his intention to leave professional baseball in 2009.
