Loren Roberts, nicknamed “The Boss of the Moss,” is an American professional golfer. A native of San Luis Obispo, California, Roberts attended the California Polytechnic State University, or Cal Poly where he took his college education and competed in several golf tournaments according to one sports review. Roberts turned professional in 1975 after his sophomore season due to the California Polytechnic State University's dropping its National Collegiate Athletic Association Division II golf team. Roberts worked as an assistant in San Luis Obispo Golf and Country Club as well as Morro Bay Golf Course. Roberts won the Foot-Joy PGA Assistant Professional Championship of 1979 and was second in 1980, according to one sports review. The PGA Tour of Australia was the first professional tour where Roberts competed and where he played briefly after his 1979 PGA victory. On his fifth attempt, Roberts earned his first PGA Tour card for the 1981 season at the PGA Tour Qualification Tournament in 1980. Roberts came back to the tournament in 1981, 1982, 1986 and 1987, earning his card every year except in 1981. Roberts' most notable finish in a major was during the 1994 U.S. Open. Roberts contended in an 18-hole playoff with Ernie Els and Colin Montgomerie who was later eliminated. However, an additional pair of sudden-death holes gave Els the title. In 2005 Roberts joined the Champions Tour. His first senior win came from his third event; he defeated Dana Quigley in a two-hole sudden-death playoff. In 2006 Roberts became the first golfer to open a Champions Tour season with three wins. Currently, Roberts hosts every May at Spring Creek Ranch in Collierville, Tennessee the annual Loren Roberts Celebrity Pro-Am, which was started in 1995. The benefitting charity is Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center of Memphis, Tennessee. Roberts also wrote a book entitled “Focus: The Name of the Game” with his fellow PGA Tour golfers Scott Simpson and Larry Mize.
