Pitcher Lefty Grove became active in the MLB from 1925 up to 1941. He played baseball in Baltimore, where he was born and raised, and caught the eye of Jack Dunn. Dunn owned the Baltimore Orioles and is also credited for the discovery of Babe Ruth. Grove was signed by Baltimore in 1920 where he was able to earn a spot in the roster by the middle of the season. After playing for the Orioles for five seasons, the Philadelphia Athletics purchased Grove's rights and he was finally able to play in the MLB. With the help of Grove, Philadelphia was able to clinch the 1929 World Series title and again in 1930. In 1931, Grove was named as the MVP for the entire league. He had to post a 2.06 ERA and 175 strikeouts to receive the award. In 1933, Grove was traded to the Boston Red Sox and helped the team with a 2.70 ERA and a 20-12 record in the 1935 season. By the end of his career, Groza came up with a .680 overall winning percentage. Grove was named into the 1933, 1935-39 All-Star selections.
