Born on January 1, 1955 in Columbia, South Carolina, Dewey LaMarr Hoyt is a retired professional baseball pitcher who appeared in the Major League Baseball. He was signed by the New York Yankees in 1973 after being drafted in the fifth round of the Major League Baseball amateur draft. However, he did not have his MLB debut with his drafting team and was traded to the Chicago White Sox in 1977. He played his debut game in the Major League Baseball on September 14, 1979 for the White Sox as a relief pitcher. In 1982, Hoyt became a starter and has set a club record for his first nine decisions, tying up with Lefty Williams. He finished his first rookie season as a leader in wins with 19 in the American League. In 1983, he recorded 24-10 win-loss ratio and a batting average of 3.66, with 31 walks. Because of his amazing performance in the league, he was given the American League Cy Young Award that year and has helped the team win the American League West championship. In 1984, Hoyt was traded to the San Diego Padres where he became a part of the National League's All-Star team. He was also named as the Most Valuable Player in the 1985 season. His last Major League Baseball appearance was on October 3, 1986 for the San Diego Padres and posted a career record of 681 strikeouts; 3.99 earned run average and a win-loss record of 96-98.
