Kirk Gibson is a retired professional baseball player. He was active in the Major League Baseball from 1979 to 1995. He was born in Pontiac, Michigan and went to Michigan State University where he played college football. Gibson was an All-American and was able to participate in the Hula Bowl, Rose Bowl as well as the Senior Bowl. Gibson only explored the idea of playing college baseball after his football coach suggested the idea to him. Gibson was selected by the Detroit Tigers during the first round. He was a right fielder for the Tigers from 1983 to 1987. Gibson was with the Tigers team during the 1984 World Series championship game. During that game, Gibson was able to make a clutch homerun. Gibson was also instrumental for the Tigers winning the American League East against the Toronto Blue Jays. In 1988, Gibson signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers where he excelled as the Dodger's de facto leader. He was named as the NL MVP in 1988. During that season, Gibson had a .290 batting average and hit 25 homeruns. The Dodgers went all the way to the World Series in 1988. Gibson hit a homerun that would secure their win over the Oakland Athletics for that particular game. The Dodgers won that year's World Series. He attended Kettering (Waterford, MI) high school and was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 1st round (12th pick) of the 1978 amateur draft.
