Julio Enrique Gotay Sanchez was born on June 9, 1939 in Fajardo, Puerto Rico. Known as Julio Gotay, he was a right-handed batter and thrower in the Major League Baseball. He started playing in the major league on August 6, 1960 for the team St. Louis Cardinals. Along with him, several players also debuted in that season like Willie Davis, Joe Torre, Matty Alou, Phil Regan, among others. According to reviews, aside from the St. Louis Cardinals with which he spent ten seasons, he likewise played for several other teams which include Pittsburgh Pirates in 1963 to 1964, California Angels in 1965 and in 1966 to 1969, the Houston Astros. In his entire career, statistics reveal he made a batting average of .260, has 6 recorded home runs and a record of 70 runs batted in. His last appearance in Major Baseball League was on September 23, 1969. On June 17, 2008, he was hospitalized because of prostate cancer. Unfortunately, Gotay died on the 4th of July at the age of 69, due to respiratory failure. His remains were placed in Nuevo Municipal de Florencio in Fajardo, Puerto Rico.
