Johnny Rodgers was an American college football player for the University of Nebraska's team, the Cornhuskers, born on July 5, 1951 in Omaha, Nebraska. He was nicknamed “The Jet” for his speed on the field, and was voted as the Player of the Century by the school. Most especially, he received the Heisman Trophy in 1972, an award given annually to one collegiate football player who demonstrates the most outstanding success on the field. Some notable winners of the Heisman include Tony Dorsett, Bo Jackson, and Barry Sanders . During Rodgers successful career in college, he broke almost all offensive team records, serving as a punt return specialist, a pass receiver, and a running back. He was nominated to the College Football All-America Team twice, and sources were quoted saying Rodgers had the “greatest ability in punt returners than anyone in the history of the game”. Another source was quoted saying Rodgers was “the greatest kick returner in college football history”. Though he was awarded the Heisman Trophy in 1972, his was stained with a gas station robbery in 1971. His professional football career after college was with the Canadian team, Montreal Alouettes, where he signed a 4-year contract in the Canadian Football League. He was known by many there as an “ordinary superstar”, a nickname he gave himself. In 1977, he attempted to return to the NFL signing with the San Diego Chargers .
