John Cornelius Ray who is commonly called as “Johnny Ray” had a ten-year career in the baseball field from 1981 to 1990. As an American born in Chouteau, Oklahoma on March 1, 1975, he is a former second baseman in Major League Baseball who batted and threw right-handed. In college, he played for the University of Arkansas ending up with College World Series in 1979. He was chosen by the Houston Astros and later on traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1981. Playing professionally, he set some game records for the Pittsburgh Pirates of the National League, the California Angels of the American League and 2 seasons for the Yakult Swallows in Japan. He made his MLB debut for the Pittsburgh Pirates on September 2, 1981. Johnny Ray filched the Rookie of the Year award by The Sporting News in 1982. As he continuously hitting and leading the league, he won the Silver Slugger Award for second baseman in 1983. Ray was steadily one of the most difficult batters to strikeout because of his confidence while playing in the field in 1984. Though the Pittsburgh Pirates traded Ray to the California Angels in 1987, he was selected to the All-Star American League in 1988 in return. Before his last MLB appearance for the California Angel son September 30, 1990, he showed his flexibility as a player by playing some games in left field. After having a career statistics of 1,502 runs batted in 594 and a batting average of .290, he retired and decided to go back to live in Oklahoma.
