John Wathan, nicknamed Duke, is a former American professional baseball player. He was born on October 4, 1949 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and is a graduate from St. Augustine High School in San Diego, California, after which he took his college education at the University of San Diego. Wathan is 6 ft. 2 in. and 205 lbs. He both batted and threw with his right. He began his professional baseball career after he was drafted by the Kansas City Royals of the Major League Baseball during the 1971 amateur draft held on January 13, 1971. Wathan was the first round pick of the team during the draft. Wathan made his pro debut on May 26, 1976. Throughout his entire ten season career from 1976 up to 1985, Wathan played as catcher and outfielder for the Kansas City Royals where he played in over eight hundred and sixty games, having an average of .261 in batting with twenty one home runs and 261 RBIs. Wathan's best season was in 1980 in which he participated in 126 games, and had a batting average of .305. His final game was held on October 6, 1985. Following his retirement, Wathan served as manager for Kansas City's Triple A Omaha Royals and was then promoted manager for the major league Royals on August 28, 1987. In 2008, Wathan served as a special assistant to the director of player development for the Royals.
