John Gibbons is a former Major League Baseball player and is currently a coach. He has served as coach for a number of teams including the Toronto Blue Jays and, presently, the Kansas City Royals. Gibbons is the bench coach for the Royals. Gibbons professional career as a player started after he was selected by the New York Mets during the 1980 Amateur Draft. He was the 24th overall pick in the draft. He played for the Mets in 1984 and then in 1986. Due to a number of injuries, Gibbons retired in 1990. He first served as a bullpen catcher in 2002 for the Blue Jays and then first base coach. He was named as manager in 2004. He went on to manage the Blue Jays up to 2008. In 2006, the Blue Jays finished second in the American League East division. Since 1993, the Blue Jays only finished third in the division. The Blue Jays won the 1992 and 1993 World Series under Cito Gaston. Gaston took over after Gibbons was fired in 2008. Gibbons was named as the bench coach for the Kansas City Royals in October, 2008.
