Votto began his career in professional baseball after he was drafted out of high school by the Cincinnati Reds during the 2002 amateur draft. Votto did not immediately make his debut in the major leagues and instead he played for the Reds' affiliates in the minor leagues. His first seasons with the Reds' rookie-level affiliates were quiet. However, Votto rush into the scene in 2004 with the Dayton Dragons when he hit twenty six doubles and fourteen home runs. He was then promoted to Class A Advanced Potomac Nationals. At the start of 2007 seasons while playing in Triple-A for the Louisville Bats, Votto was called by the Reds on September 1, 2007 and made his Major League debut four days after, striking out against New York Mets' Guillermo Mota .
