Gump Worsley is a former Canadian pro hockey athlete who played as goalie for the Montreal Canadiens, Minnesota North Stars and the New York Rangers of the National Hockey League. Worsley began his pro hockey career in the fall of 1952 when he was signed by the New York Rangers of the National Hockey League. Although Wosley played for a last place for the Rangers, he was able to take home the Calder Memorial Trophy as rookie of the year in 1952. Worsley was however, sent to the minor leagues after allegedly asking for a $500 a year pay increase, one sports review said. Worsley played for Vancouver Canucks of the Western League where he won the most valuable player award in 1954, where also in that year; Worsley resumed his position as starting goalie for the Rangers. In the summer of 1963, Wosley was traded to the Montreal Canadiens and was suspended in the middle of the 1969–70 season for not reporting to the Canadiens. Worsley was then saved from retirement by the Minnesota North Stars where he had his last season in 1974. Gump Worsley passed away at the age of 77 on January 26, 2007 in his home in Beloeil, Quebec, Canada.
