Guillermo Vilas, nicknamed “Young Bull of the Pampas,” is a retired Argentine professional tennis player. Vilas was listed at 5 ft. 11 in. and 165 lbs. Vilas was left-handed and played his first ever tour event in 1969. From 1974 up to 1982 Vilas was in the year end top ten. Vilas had won four Grand Slam titles; the 1977 French Open, the 1977 US Open and the 1978 and 1979 Australian Open. He also became a three times runner-up at the French Open in 1975, 1978, and 1982 and once in the Australian Open on January 1977. His first big break came during the 1974 Masters tournament, where he defeated Ilie Nastase in the finals. As a left-handed baseliner, it was during 1977 when Vilas's best year on tour came. This is when he won two Grand Slam singles tournaments and 16 Association of Tennis Professionals tournaments that he entered. During 1977, Vilas had playing record of one hundred forty five wins with fifteen losses. The zenith of Vilas' career during this phenomenal run was after emerging victorious at the last US Open played at Forest Hills against Jimmy Connors . Still in 1977, Vilas had a 46 match winning streak, and won seven uninterrupted titles; Kitzbuhel, Washington, Louisville, South Orange, Columbus, US Open and Paris after Wimbledon in 1977. Vilas retired in 1989. However, he still played ATP Challenger Series until 1992. In 1991 Vilas was inducted to the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
