Greg Pruitt is a former American football player. He was born in Houston, Texas. Pruitt took his college education at the University of Oklahoma in 1971 and 1972. He ranked third among Sooners, which is defined by sources as a native or resident of the State of Oklahoma, in career all-purpose yards. During his stay at the University of Oklahoma, Pruitt got 3,122 rushing yards, 491 receiving yards, 139 yards on punt returns and 679 yards returning kickoffs. He scored 41 career touchdowns as a Sooner. Pruitt started his professional football career when he was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the National Football League. He was the 2nd round pick of the team in the 1973 NFL Draft. He was listed at 5 ft. 10 in. and 190 lbs., and played as running back. After being drafted in 1973, Pruitt spent nine years on the Browns from 1973 to 1981. After which he joined the Los Angeles Raiders in 1982 to 1984 where he played as a kick returner. Throughout his professional career in the NFL, Pruitt was selected to five Pro Bowls. In 1979, Pruitt won American Broadcasting Company's Superstars, which is an all-around sports competition with the purpose of pitting elite athletes from diverse sports against one another in a chain of athletic events resembling a decathlon. Pruitt also established the Greg Pruitt Rule which illegalizes tear-away jerseys. Sources say Pruitt purposely wore flimsy jerseys that ripped apart in the hands of would-be tacklers.
