Granville Wilbur Hamner, known simply as Granville Hamner, hails from Richmond, Virginia. He was a former professional baseball player who played in the Major Baseball League. He batted and threw with his right hand and made his first Major League Baseball appearance on September 14, 1944 for the Philadelphia Phillies. He joined the Phillies when he was 15 and stayed with them for 15 and half years. He played as a shortstop and a second baseman while his brother, Garvin Hamner, played as an infielder. At the age of 23, he became a leader of the champions. He was able to have a four-time record of 80 runs batted in and played in the 1950 World Series where he batted .429 and made three hits extra base. In 1952, Phillies' manager, Eddie Sawyer, named him as a captain of the team. Hamner joined the Cleveland Indians on May 16, 1959 but reviews say he was able to record a .164 batting average only. He managed the minor league team of the Kansas City Athletics later that year and the farm system of the Phillies in the 1970s and the 1980 seasons. According to statistics, Hamner made a .262 batting average and 104 home runs in his 17 seasons in the major league. Hamner died in Pennsylvania at the age of 66.
