Even with the nickname “Stumpy”, Gail Goodrich was an exceptional professional basketball player. Playing as a guard, Goodrich played in the National Basketball Association from 1965 to 1979. He played for the longest time for the Los Angeles Lakers. He went to the John Francis Polytechnic High School and led the school's basketball team to the Los Angeles City championships. Goodrich proceeded to enrolling in the University of California, Los Angeles and led the varsity team to two national championships. While playing college basketball, Goodrich was named as an All-American for two instances and was named as the Helm's Foundation “Co-Player of the Year”. During his senior year in college, he was named into the NCAA Final Four All-Tournament team. Because he was only 6'1”, a number of NBA teams were afraid to draft Goodrich. He was initially signed by the Los Angeles Lakers but was sent to the Phoenix Suns in 1968. Goodrich became one of the team's best players and was named to his first All-Star Game in 1969. During that season, Goodrich was able to post an average of 20.0 points and 7.5 assists for each game. He was traded back to Los Angeles in 1970 and was able to come up with a 22.4 ppg average from 1968 to 1975. From 1972 to 1975, Goodrich was named to every All-Star Game.
