Ford Frick was the president of the National League from 1934 to 1951 and the commissioner of the Major League Baseball from 1951 to 1965. Frick was inducted in the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1970. An award, the Ford C. Frick Award, was also created in honor of him in 1978. This award is presented to sports broadcasters who have made major contributions for the sport. Frick, born and bred in Wawaka, Indiana, attended the DePauw University in the same state. He was a midwestern sportswriter. He moved to New York City where he worked for William Randolph Hearst. He is the person credited for the creation of radio sports reports that are aired every day. Frick became the public relations director for the National League in 1934, succeeding John Heydler. His term ended in 1951 and was succeeded by Warren Giles. Frick was a huge proponent for the creation of the National Baseball Hall of Fame Museum in Cooperstown, New York. He welcomed the breaking of the color barrier after the admission of Jackie Robinson. He was named the Major League Baseball's third commissioner in 1951, succeeding Happy Chandler.
