Emile Alphonse Griffith is a retired boxer who was born on February 3, 1938 in Saint Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. His potential for boxing was accidentally noticed in a hat factory and after his initial training, fame came easily. He bagged the New York Golden Gloves championship in 1958 and started to train for professional fighting in that year. He was able to win the Welterweight championship title when he defeated Benny “The Kid” Paret in 1961, a fight which became very controversial when Paret died ten days after being knocked out by Griffith. He also won the Middleweight title from Dick Tiger in 1962. In his entire boxing career, he was able to fight with Luis Rodriguez, a Cuban fighter, Carlos Monzon from Argentina, Denny Moyer of America and Eckhard Dagge whom he fought in his final title bout. Aside from being a fighter himself, he also trained some boxers like Juan Laporte and Wilfred Benites. Although he was plagued with a lot of controversies because of his sexuality, he remained strong and even married and adopted a child. He was awarded The Ring Fighter of the Year in 1964 and was inducted to the International Boxing Hall of Fame as well as the World Boxing Hall of Fame.
