Richard Hirschfield “Dick” Williams is a retired Major League Baseball player, coach, manager, and front office consultant. He was famous for being a slave- driver and a sharp- tongued manager and is one of 7 managers to win pennants in both major leagues. He also led 3 franchises to the World Series like Bill McKechnie did. He started as a player in the MLB when he was selected by the Brooklyn Dodgers . His 1st game was on June 10, 1951 against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Upon injuring his shoulder, he learned to play for different positions and became an infamous bench jockey. He played for the Baltimore Orioles, Cleveland Indians, Kansas City Athletics, and Boston Red Sox throughout his 13- season career and recorded a .260 batting average, with 70 home runs and 331 runs batted in. Williams was appointed player- coach for the Seattle Rainiers of the Pacific Coast League in 1964 and was promoted to manager in 1965 for the Toronto Maple Leafs . With his disciplinarian methods, he led the Maple Leafs in 2 Governors' Cup championships then managed the Boston Red Sox. Through the same methods he used with the Maple Leafs, Williams redeemed the Red Sox in 1967. He even led Boston to the 1967 World Series against the St. Louis Cardinals which they lost. In 1971, Williams led the Oakland Athletics to 2 consecutive World Series, one of which they won against the New York Mets. He managed a few more teams like the California Angels, Montreal Expos , San Diego Padres, and Seattle Mariners before finally retiring. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2008.
