Born on December 11, 1968 in Tampa, Florida, Derek Bell is a former Major League Baseball player. He is primarily a right fielder and center fielder. When he was in high school he played at C. Leon King High School in Tampa and it is where the Toronto Blue Jays saw him as a potential player. He was then chosen by Toronto during the second round of the 1987 draft as the 49th overall pick. He made his minor league debut on 1987 in the New York-Penn League. In 1988, he was hailed to the South Atlantic League All-Star team. Bell recorded a total .344 batting average, hit 29 doubles, five triples, and 12 home runs in 352 at bats. He was then promoted to the class AA. In 1991, he batted a total of .346 with 22 doubles, 12 triples, 13 home runs, 57 walks, and 29 stolen bases. He successfully made it to the International League All-Star team and bagged the International League's Most Valuable Player award. It was on June 28, 1991 when Bell made his major league debut where he started in left field in a 3-1 loss to the Seattle Mariners. Before the 1993 season, Bell was traded to the San Diego Padres. He had his best season in 1995 where his .334 batting average became the fourth highest in the league. All in all that season Bell has recorded a .314 batting average with 41 doubles and 22 home runs.
