Cameron Kenneth Ward was born on February 29, 1984 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and plays as a goaltender for the Carolina Hurricanes of the National Hockey League at present. Ward was drafted by the Hurricanes in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft as 25th overall. He led the Red Deer Rebels of the Western Hockey League twice in his three season stay there. He then moved to the Lowell Lock Monsters of the American Hockey League. He finally signed with the Hurricanes on May 13, 2004. In his rookie year, he served as a backup goalie to Martin Gerber. His first game was against the Tampa Bay Lightning in October 2005. His excellent performance in the 2006 Stanley Cup gave him a place in the list of goalies being considered to play for Team Canada in the 2006 Winter Olympics. Though he did not make it to the national team, his stellar play was crucial to the Hurricanes in winning the title. This was a good season for Ward because he was able to set milestones that were previously credited to Patrick Roy. These milestones include winning the Stanley Cup during his rookie year and the only rookie to record a shut out in 20 years. He also won the Conn Smythe Trophy that same year. He was one of the only two players to have won this during his rookie year; the other one was Ron Hextall. The 2006 Stanley Cup ended with the Hurricanes' win against the Edmonton Orioles, Ward's childhood team.
