James Robert Horner, known as Bob Horner, is a retired Major League Baseball player who served as a third baseman and first baseman for two teams in the league. He was born on August 6, 1957 in Junction City, Kansas and attended Apollo High School where he established records in baseball. He pursued his college baseball career at Arizona State University where he became a recipient of the first ever Golden Spikes award. He also set records in the NCAA with 58 home runs for his college career and 25 home runs made in one season. He was the 1977 College World Series Most Valuable Player. He started his professional career as a first overall pick in the 1978 MLB amateur draft by the Atlanta Braves. He had his debut season at MLB that year and appeared in 89 games. He won over Ozzie Smith as the National League Rookie of the Year. In 1987, he became a free agent and signed a deal with the Japanese League team Yakult Swallows where he made 31 home runs and runs batted in of 73. He returned to play in the Major League Baseball for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1988 and not soon after went into retirement after obtaining an injury. He posted a .277 batting average in his ten year MLB career and hit 218 home runs with 685 runs batted in. He was inducted to the College Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006.
