Originally a right- handed pitcher, William Edward Wagner trained himself to become a southpaw by throwing baseballs against the wall of a barn when he injured his right arm. Known for throwing intermittently fastballs despite his height, Wagner is currently a free agent pitcher for the Atlanta Braves . Throughout his career, he established himself as one of baseball's best relief pitchers in spite of being small compared to other professional players. Billy was born on July 25, 1971 in Tannersville, Virginia and attended the Tazewell school system. He finished high school in Tazewell High School and was awarded with the Baseball Player of the Year for 1990. During college, he set a number of records for non- professional baseball such as setting a record of 16 wins and four losses, among others. He was chosen by the Houston Astros in the first round of the Major League Baseball draft selection in June 1993. His debut on September 13, 1995 was his only appearance for that particular season where the Astros went against the New York Mets. Wagner pitched against only one batter in this game. During his stay with the Astros, he played exclusively as a relief pitcher. Some of the notable games where Wagner played with the team were against are the Tucson Toros, the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Arizona Diamondbacks, and the St. Louis Cardinals. He also broke the old Major League record of strikeouts set by Rob Dibble by the Cincinnati Reds and got the Relief Pitcher of the Year Award in the National League, these among the many awards and records he had set with the Houston. After leaving the Astros, Wagner played for the Philadelphia Phillies, then the New York Mets, and Boston Red Sox before signing a contract with the Atlanta Braves. On June 25, 2010, Wagner achieved a great career high of 400 saves in a game against the Detroit Tigers. He has announced that he will be retiring after the 2010 season so he can spend more time with his family.
