Billy Hitchcock was a professional baseball player in the Major League Baseball and also served for some time as the president of the Southern League, a class AA league. Hitchcock was also a manager, coach and scout. Hitchcock, who was born in Inverness, Alabama, decided to study in Auburn University. During the 1942 season, Hitchcock was able to join the Detroit Tigers team but had to serve in the Army Air Force after World War II broke out. Hitchcock finished serving in the military in 1946 and promptly went back to playing baseball. Hitchcock was able to play for a total of nine seasons, appearing in a total of 703 games. Aside from the Tigers, Hitchcock was able to play for the Washington Senators, the Boston Red Sox, the St. Louis Browns and for the Philadelphia Athletics. Hitchcock ended his career as a professional baseball player after the 1953 season. Directly after his retirement, Hitchcock was made manager of different AAA teams at the same time served as part of the coaching staff of the Detroit Tigers. Hitchcock also coached for the Atlanta Braves and was employed for some time as a scout for the Montreal Expos. Billy Hitchcock is the brother of Jimmy Hitchcock who also played professionally.
