William Augustus Hatcher, known as Billy Hatcher, is a retired Major League Baseball player who was born on October 4, 1960. He had his high school education at Williams High School in Arizona and went to Yavapai Community College where he played college baseball. He was an All-America selection while in college. He turned professional in 1981 after being signed by the Chicago Cubs during the MLB Draft in that year. He spent the first years of his career in the minor league teams and was later on traded to the Houston Astros. He played as a left fielder for the Astros and was loved by the Astros fans when he saved the team from being eliminated by a powerful home run in the 1986 National League Championship Series, Game 6. According to statistics, his best year was in 1987 where he logged a record of .296 batting average and 53 stolen bases with 63 runs batted in. His stolen bases were the third highest in the National League that year and he made 11 home runs. After a few seasons with the Astros, he joined the Pittsburgh Pirates via trade and appeared in 27 games for the team. He was then moved to the Cincinnati Reds with which he had an unforgettable 1990 season with 30 stolen bases. He also played for the Boston Red Sox and the Philadelphia Phillies as well as the Texas Rangers. Hatcher presently works as a coach for the Cincinnati Reds.
