William Karnet Willis is a retired American football player. He played college football at the Ohio State University . Despite being small for a lineman, Ohio head coach Paul Brown favored quickness over size so Willis became a starter in 1942. He was an inductee in the College and Professional Football Halls of Fame. Willis was one of the first African American professional football players who made his debut with the Cleveland Browns of the All American Football Conference (AAFC). In 1946, NFL was improbable for Willis for there are no African American s had played in the league since 1933. Since he is having a hard time getting in to the field, he took a job as head football coach and athletic director at Kentucky State College. He started to explore some options playing for Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League. He began to play for the Cleveland Browns in both offense and defense. Changes were made to substitution rules allowed him to concentrate on the defensive middle guard position. This time, the Browns won the title in every year that they played in AAFC and he was named All League Player. Finally, the Browns stepped in to the National Football League in 1950. He was a 3- time Pro Bowl and was inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1977.
