William Earnest Walsh was born on November 30, 1931 in Los Angeles, California. He was the head football coach for the San Francisco 49ers and Stanford University . He was the one who popularized the West Coach Defense. Under his coaching, the 49ers won three NFC championship titles and three Super Bowls. Prior to becoming a coach, he played football during his high school and college years. He finished college with a degree in physical education from the San Jose State University. He acted as assistant coach for the Spartans coaching staff and got his master's degree in 1959. He interviewed for the position of assistant coach to Marv Levy in the University California, Berkeley after which he went to coach at Stanford before finally coaching for professional football. He initially worked as an assistant coach for the Oakland Raiders where he was under the tutelage of Al Davis. He then went to the Cincinnati Bengals in 1968, helping the team build their offense around then quarterback Ken Anderson and wide receiver Isaac Curtis. After the Bengals' head coach retired, Walsh resigned and worked as an assistant coach for the San Diego Chargers. He was then hired to be the head coach of Stanford for2 seasons, which he took to the Sun Bowl championship title in 1977 and a Bluebonnet Bowl win in 1978. Walsh also won the Pac- 8 Coach of the Year award in 1977. In 1979, Walsh started coaching the then long- suffering 49ers which he eventually led to a Super Bowl win in 1981, 1984, and 1988. He worked with the 49ers for ten years before retiring. Upon retirement, he worked as a broadcaster for NBC then returned to Stanford for another winning season. After losing consecutively in 2 seasons, Walsh finally retired from coaching. By 2004 he was diagnosed with leukemia and died at the age of 75 on July 30, 2007.
