He is a retired baseball player who made his first appearance in the Major Baseball League on August 13, 1981 for the Kansas City Royals. He is graduate of Mt. Vernon High School and went to east Tennessee State University in college. He played mainly as a pitcher for a number of teams like the San Diego Padres and the Chicago White Sox. He also played for the San Francisco Giants with which he spent most of his career with. According to reviews, the 1983 season is his finest season when he topped the National League in BB with 1.67 and ERA with 2.25. That year, he was included to the National League All-Star team. He also played in the 1987 National League Championship Series as part of the San Francisco Giants. Hammaker played for 12 years in the MLB and posted a career record of 59 games won, 67 losses, earned run average of 3.66 and 615 strikeouts. Currently, he stays in Knoxville, Tennessee with his family of five kids. He is the coach of a middle basketball team of his daughters and is also into business.
