Two-time former head coach of the Oakland Raiders, Art Shell was also a promising American foot ball player in the National Football League. Born on November 26, 1946 in Charleston, South Carolina, USA, Shell is the second African American head coach after Fritz Pollard in the history of NFL. He has studied in Bonds-Wilson High School in North Charleston, South Carolina but the school no longer exists today. Shell first played in Maryland State College. He had participated 24 playoff contests which includes Super Bowls XI and XV. He was also named to eight Pro Bowls. In 1989, he was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame and he was ranked number 55 on The Sporting News' list of 100 Greatest Football Players in 1999. As a coach, Shell became the coach of the Raiders and garnered a record of 54 wins and 38 losses. He was declared American Football Conference Coach of the Year in 1990. This was awarded to him when the Raiders won the AFC West Division having a 12-4 record and when the team has advanced to the AFC championship game in the playoffs. Shell has also coached Kansas City Chiefs and Atlanta Falcons before he worked as a senior vice president for the National Football League where he is the in charge of football operations.
