He had his high school education at Logansport High School where he served as a baseball varsity athlete. He was once named as the Most Valuable Player in his team and participated in two regional championship games. He was also included in the All-Star team and continued to practice his baseball skills in University of Notre Dame where he finished college. He was selected by the New York Mets as first round selection during the 2001 Amateur Draft.
